Russians Eagerly Participate in Medical Experiments, Despite Risks

“These studies are also done more cheaply and swiftly in Russia than the West, as volunteers, perhaps tapping Russians’ deep sense of fatalism, are surprisingly forthcoming.

“Why not? I take risks every day,” Mr. Maksimov said, noting that he recently flew on a Russian-made airplane.

Patients, as was the case with Ms. Malinina, are eager to join trials because often it is the only way to receive modern medical care.

But there have been strange results. In 2007, an F.D.A. official wrote that the agency approved Eli Lilly’s top-selling antipsychotic drug Zyprexa for use by adolescents based on the results of a Russian test, even though trials in the United States showed the drug had no effect. Why tests differed in Russia and the United States was never explained. Doctors now routinely prescribe the drug for American adolescents.

Sewers of Bogota

This is a TED length minidocumentary on the people who live in the sewer systems of Bogota, Colombia.

Aside from literally sleeping in feces, these people are dodging rats, flash floods and drug addicts. What’s worse, the sewer dwellers are constantly under attack by local “death squads,” who fire open rounds and pour gasoline into their underground homes, then set them ablaze.

Kinda heavy and horrifically disgusting but interesting.  Nubs down to killing homeless people.

Monsonto GM Crops Causing Organ Failure in Rats

In a study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences, analyzing the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers found that agricultural giant Monsanto’s GM corn is linked to organ damage in rats.

According to the study, which was summarized by Adam Shake at Twilight Earth, “Three varieties of Monsanto’s GM corn – Mon 863, insecticide-producing Mon 810, and Roundup® herbicide-absorbing NK 603 – were approved for consumption by US, European and several other national food safety authorities.”

Monsanto gathered its own crude statistical data after conducting a 90-day study, even though chronic problems can rarely be found after 90 days, and concluded that the corn was safe for consumption. The stamp of approval may have been premature, however.

In the conclusion of the IJBS study, researchers wrote:

“Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences in liver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function of these organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologically insignificant as has been proposed by others. We therefore conclude that our data strongly suggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity….These substances have never before been an integral part of the human or animal diet and therefore their health consequences for those who consume them, especially over long time periods are currently unknown.”

Monsanto has immediately responded to the study, stating that the research is “based on faulty analytical methods and reasoning and do not call into question the safety findings for these products.”

The IJBS study’s author Gilles-Eric Séralini responded to the Monsanto statement on the blog, Food Freedom, “Our study contradicts Monsanto conclusions because Monsanto systematically neglects significant health effects in mammals that are different in males and females eating GMOs, or not proportional to the dose. This is a very serious mistake, dramatic for public health. This is the major conclusion revealed by our work, the only careful reanalysis of Monsanto crude statistical data.”

As the article states Monsanto gets to gather it’s own data about toxicity in a particularly way.

Honestly, I’m exhausted and I would like to read the actual study but I’m just trying to jam through email right now.

Epic Moments in Negotiation (Horticulture Edition)

PORTLAND, England, Dec. 7 (UPI) — A British prisoner convinced guards his marijuana plants were tomato plants — and they even allowed him to decorate one as a Christmas tree, a source said.

Mohamed Jalloh, 28, of Brent, North London, grew his pot plants at Verne Prison in Portland, Dorset, in southern England, and for five months, guards admired his gardening, The Sun reported Saturday.

But after another inmate told guards what the plants really were, they checked out photos of marijuana plants on the Internet, and the jig was up.

“You could see the plants from the grounds, as his cell looks on to the education department and communal outside area,” a source said. “They were on show for the world to see.”

wait for it….

Jalloh is serving eight years for supplying drugs.

Judge orders 17 Chinese Muslims released from Guantanamo Bay

For the first time, a federal judge has ordered the Bush administration to release prisoners held at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, ruling Tuesday that 17 Chinese Muslims must be brought to his courtroom by the end of the week so that they can be set free.

U.S. District Judge Ricardo M. Urbina said that the government’s authority to hold the men had “ceased” and that they were entitled to be released. The 17 are Uighurs who fled persecution in the far western reaches of China. U.S. authorities, fearing what Chinese officials would do, have refused to send them back to China

wait, back up a second. For 4 years the pentagon was saying “We have to keep torturing them, because otherwise they might get…tortured” ?!?!?!

did i get that right? because it is a fucking sad day to be an American. +1 internets to Ricardo M. Urbina.

Also, in the rumor mill and unsubstantiated second hand story department, I met a guy at a cocktail party last year who worked with a lot of the gitmo stuff and he said that nearly every single case was exactly like this. ie zero evidence.

Paper Please

China announced this week that production and use of plastic bags in supermarkets and retail shops will be banned beginning June 1. This new law could have a considerably positive environmental impact, given that Chinese citizens “use as many as 3 billion plastic bags a day.” The law is part of a larger campaign to fight “white pollution” in China, which includes other forms of rampant plastic and styrofoam use as well.

You know things are fucked when *China* starts passing the US in environmental standards.

Revolutionary Iconography Gone Meta

It’s as if he’s saying “You want some of this?? Yeah I got it right here!n626258736_138493_784.jpg

I’m not a fan of che, he’s a stalinist from what I can tell. Plus, I’m going to side with all the other people tired of 1st year college students wearing revolutionary tshirts rather than actually being revolutionary. Furthermore, I don’t support killing people, ever. I’m more of an Zapatista Army of National Liberation man myself.

This sign reads, in Spanish: Top sign: “You are in Zapatista rebel territory. Here the people give the orders and the government obeys.” Bottom sign: “North Zone. Council of Good Government. Trafficking in weapons, planting of drugs, drug use, alcoholic beverages, and illegal sales of wood are strictly prohibited. No to the destruction of nature.” Federal Highway 307, Chiapas.

Yeah, that EZLN article on wikipedia is pretty good.
