Okay, so I told myself that I wasn’t going to write any updates for the blog (blogging) until I did a massive overhaul of the design and software features. Essentially: Actually implement the stuff that I always complain about other blogs not having.

Instead of that I just spent the last four days setting up a large fire art installation at Electric Daisy Carnival, the biggest festival in north america (there were riots). I enjoyed too many of the complimentary vodka/energy drinks in the vip cabana at Electric Daisy Carnival, leaving me with an uncharacteristically lucid hang over. (it was mild, more of a lean over really)

I was going to change my religion on facebook to “information wants to be free” but I thought that some people would misinterpret that in a provocative way.

I say, you yanks seemed to have mucked things up pretty good. Jolly good then!

So the core problem with President Bush authorizing torture is that it’s an action predicated on the notion that the president gets to dictate the law. When President Obama choose not to prosecute anyone in the Bush administration for authorizing torture he was engaged in the same flawed dictation of what is and isn’t legal.

I’ve been ranting about this for months and the first response is always about political capital. Without engaging that argument I just want to point out that it’s an implicit acknowledgment of a government ruled not by law of justice but instead by favoritism, opportunity, and power brokerage. Such governments will always be dysfunctional and corrupt.

I want to stress that this is not about torture but instead about the framework in which we allow our leaders to act.

People don’t judge you as much by when you’re all sitting around and everything is cool but rather by how you react when everything goes to hell.

The fact that it’s being hailed as historic is as disappointingly droll as the event itself {but me commenting on it not being a noteworthy event implicitly makes it noteworthy. CURSES! Foiled by media theory AGAIN!!}. Somewhere I saw him making comments about how this is his 15 minutes of fame or whatever

J.D. Salinger, now 90 years old and still living in seclusion in New Hampshire, is suing the author and publisher of a “sequel” to Catcher in the Rye, seeking to prevent its publication later this year. 60 Years Later, by a mysterious guy living in Sweden (!) named John David California, imagines Holden Caufield as a 76-year-old escapee from a retirement home wandering the streets of New York City. Salinger’s lawyers argue that “the sequel is not a parody and it does not comment upon or criticise the original. It is a ripoff pure and simple.”

woohoo for my buddy noah who is working for the judge that will see this very interesting case. I’m actually not sure which way I think it will turn out. This falls under the category of Fan Fiction afaik which is cool so long as it’s not for sale, but there is an issue around Salinger failing to exercise his franchise. EXCITING!!!
