Urge the Senate to Oppose Indefinite Military Detention of American Citizens

The U.S. Senate is considering the unthinkable: changing detention laws to imprison people — including Americans living in the United States itself — indefinitely and without charge. The Defense Authorization bill — a “must-pass” piece of legislation — is headed to the Senate floor with troubling provisions that would give the President — and all future presidents — the authority to indefinitely imprison people, without charge or trial, both abroad and inside the United States. Urge your Senators to oppose sections 1031 and 1032 of the Defense Authorization bill.

XKCD -> What Your Favorite Map Projection Says About You

XKCD rules because there is always a little hidden joke if you mouseover the image. Since I’m reposting here, this is the secret message!

“What’s that? You think I don’t like the Peters map because I’m uncomfortable with having my cultural assumptions challenged? Are you sure you’re not … ::puts on sunglasses:: … projecting?

#Seriously

As of right now this has about 220 shares on facebook. I thought it was pretty interesting to read through the comments. Here are a few highlights:

> The whole idea of predatory lending is absurd!

False, it is a widespread and profitable practice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predatory_lending

a thousand words, too bad they are all wrong. The financial sector is massively regulated, a more pertinent sign would direct the US govt to apply the regulation it enforces on the financial and private sector to itself, the government operates free of essentially any fiscal responsibilities or with even the most tenuous links with any economic reality, why do you think the US fed gov is in FIFTEEN TRILLION DOLLARS of debt? no regulation on the regulators, government waste, government graft, government stupidity. don’t blame the private sector for poverty and debt, blame the public sector (I cite the US because thats an OWS protester)

True, the financial sector has lots of regulations many of the important ones are not enforced because the SEC has systematically been weakened. The US pays almost no interest on it’s debt. That debt is entirely unrelated to the meltdown.

From Melissa, the woman in the photo holding the sign:

Wow, I was unaware that my coat and glasses would offend people. I had hoped my poster would induce more intelligent debate. Alas, the problems of being female in this society. Also, I do actively occupy several legal jobs that I occupied a college degree for that allowed me to occupy a legal dwelling. I out here for my family, who work hard and have not been so lucky. I am also out here because what the hell is so wrong to demand a better community? Your anger that people are tired of having opportunity stripped away from them and are saying something about it is simply stunning. Occupy a heart. Also, occupy the bill of rights, the constitution and the damned inscription on the statue of liberty. Obviously, you hate freedom.

most of our civil rights were won through acts of peaceful civil disobedience. There’s nothing in the constitution that has insured rights for african americans, women, native americans, workers, etc… If you study American history you’ll find that this is how our individual freedoms and civil rights have been won time and time again.

annnnnnnd, I no longer have the energy to read all these.

Quote of the Day: Ely Culbertson

We must conquer war or war will conquer us.
- Ely Culbertson -

Ely Culbertson (July 22, 1891 – December 27, 1955) was an entreprenurial American contract bridge personality dominant during the Thirties and Forties. He played a major role in the early popularization of the game, and was widely regarded as “the man who made contract bridge”.[1] He was a great showman who became rich, was highly extravagant, and lost and gained fortunes several times over.

A I would like to note that the Ely Culbertson wikipedia page is a rarity in that it is well written and fun to read. It harkens back to the old days of wikipedia when such things mattered. Simply linking to it will likely lead to attacks by deletionists. Fuck those people.
B I am horrified that the United States is still engaged in a pointless war in afghanistan. It is a waste of time, it is a waste of money and it does not achieve it’s stated goals. It should stop immediately.

Git Yer Vote On! (or not)

A couple days ago I was among the vanishingly small number of people who turned out to vote in San Francisco. Normally I vote by mail because I prefer to research and consider from the privacy and comfort of my couch. Although I just found out that san francisco doesn’t even really count mail in votes before declaring victors in local races. Another fun fact:

“About 40 percent of the population,” the same manager said, “think Gavin Newsom is still the mayor.” But even that number might be optimistic, said professor Corey Cook, the resident political expert at the University of San Francisco

Unsurprisingly, the incumbents took pretty much everything. It was also one of the lowest voter turn outs in sf in a long time. I voted to fund schools, roads&bridges and basic municipal stuff because the city can’t afford it due to some elaborate pension scandal that involves bus drivers retiring as multimillionaires.

There were two propositions that were supposedly going to deal with the pension problem. My research indicated that neither of them would.

This is what voting makes me feel like:

A Logic Puzzle and An Analysis

The Puzzle >>

Banksters ambush an #occupywallst march on Fulton St and capture three protesters. The Banksters give the protesters a single chance to escape without co-opting their movement by giving them dead-end, churn and burn analyst positions at Goldman.

The hippies are lined up in order of height, and are tied to parking meters facing the same direction. The protester in the rear can see the backs of his two friends, the protester in the middle can see the back of the protester in front, and the protester in front cannot see anyone. The Banksters show the protesters five protest signs. Three of the signs are black and two of the signs are white.

Blindfolds are then placed over each protester’s eyes and a sign is placed in each protester’s hand. The protesters cannot see their own signs. The two signs left over are hidden. The blindfolds are then removed and it is said to the protesters that if one of them can guess what color sign they have all three can go back to their shanties in Zucotti park. However, if the protesters cannot guess correctly they will have to work 85 hours a week making power points of capital structure risk profiles for counterparties.

The protester in the rear who can see both of his friends’ signs but not his own says, “I don’t know”. The middle protester who can see the sign of the LGBTQ in front, but not her own says, “I don’t know”. The front protester who cannot see ANYBODY’S sign says “I know!”

How did ze know the color of zer sign and what color was it?

Over drinks at a bar on a dreary, snowy night in Washington this past month, a former Senate investigator laughed as he polished off his beer. “Everything’s fucked up, and nobody goes to jail,” he said. “That’s your whole story right there. Hell, you don’t even have to write the rest of it. Just write that.”

I put down my notebook. “Just that?”

“That’s right,” he said, signaling to the waitress for the check. “Everything’s fucked up, and nobody goes to jail. You can end the piece right there.”

This is from a pretty interesting article on SEC corruption and how it lead to the economic debacle. I think it’s a critical piece of the puzzle.
