I installed a blog comment suite called intense debate that reworks the comments pretty seriously. Voodoo Knickers now supports
- Threaded Comments
- OpenID
- Comment Subscriptions
- Comment Ratings
- Other things which I haven’t played with yet.
I am somewhat concerned that it seems to be loading slowly. It feels like the IntenseDebate plugin is loading the comments on from their servers which is incredibly dumb for several reasons. 1. it slows load time which is the number one thing that determines use. 2. It’s not a sustainable growth model.
Please note that I will still delete stupid and boring comments that don’t really add anything to the discussion. I will also continue to publish highly relevant comments in the post body if I feel so inclined. Test out the system and please let me know what you think!
currently feels bloaty & has noticeable lag.
threaded comments & comment subscription are def. cool.
I don't use openID, and have strong doubts about its long-term usefulness (also note: most (all?) of the OpenID board members are also employees of Six Apart media, owners of MoveableType/TypePad etc.). Do you? If so tell me why & let's test this threaded comments thing.
yeah, this is super bloaty. I had to wait 10 seconds for the page to load. totally unacceptable.
Interesting that the board members of openID are six apart people. I don't know about it in the long term, personally I like to keep my usernames and logins apart. I think other people like it though.
Also, comment approval is slightly irritating. Were you having a problem with spam? Isn't this redundant when you have comment rating?
so previously all comments were moderated but people that I had positively moderated once were automoderated afterwards. Rating comments up/down doesn't create a redundant system but instead gives people access to content that people think is more relevant. or gives people the opportunity to hate on stuff that they aren't into.
ALSO: subscribing to the thread gets me a "please confirm thread subscription" email, after which I have to follow a link to their website to get subscribed. This stuff is supposed to make life MORE convenient. Increasingly low evaluation of intensedebate.
gahhhhh yeah, I'm probably going to get rid of it.
